Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has entered into a strategic partnership with Indus Towers Limited to launch two breakthrough research initiatives focused on sustainable energy technologies. The projects – part of Indus Towers’ flagship CSR initiative Pragati – aim to revolutionize solar power generation and energy storage in India.

As global climate goals accelerate the transition toward renewable energy, the collaboration brings together academic research and industrial commitment to innovation.

Indus Towers Initiatives

The first research initiative centers on the development of high-efficiency Perovskite Solar Cell technology, envisioned as a superior and cost-effective alternative to conventional silicon photovoltaic systems. These advanced solar cells, being developed indigenously, hold promise for terrestrial and space-based energy applications.

The second project seeks to tackle both energy storage and agricultural waste management by converting rice straw into doped hard carbon materials for sodium-ion battery systems. These materials, when used as anodes or additives, offer a scalable and environmentally friendly alternative to lithium-ion technology, with the added benefit of reducing stubble burning.

“This partnership exemplifies how industry and academia can co-create practical, high-impact solutions,” said Prachur Sah, Managing Director & CEO of Indus Towers. “The convergence of solar and storage technologies developed in this initiative could redefine the future of clean energy in India.”

Prof. Ravindra Gudi, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Bombay, echoed the sentiment, stating, “Research should be driven by purpose and relevance. This partnership is an excellent example of how scientific innovation can be harnessed to serve both national interests and global sustainability goals.”

By aligning CSR funding with cutting-edge scientific research, the initiative underscores the power of collaborative innovation in building a sustainable and self-reliant India.
